Army Corps Awards Contract for New Fort Shafter Child Development Center

FORT SHAFTER, HI -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Honolulu District recently awarded a contract for the FY12 MCA PN64967 Child Development Center, Fort Shafter, Oahu, Hawaii to 57 Builders, Ltd., Honolulu, for $9,573,118.

Construction includes a standard design Child Development Center for 105 – 135 children ages six to10 years. The facility will include a computer lab, homework center, activity rooms, demonstration/teaching kitchen, a multi-purpose room for fitness and sports, a controlled entry area, administrative area, training space, staff lounge/work room, kitchen, laundry, storage, supply rooms, information systems, fire protection and alarm systems and energy monitoring control systems (EMCS) connection.

In addition, the facility will include an outdoor play area with age appropriate child development equipment, safety surfacing and fencing. Sustainable Design and Development (SDD) and Energy Policy Act of 2005 features will be provided. Supporting facilities include site development, utilities and connections, lighting, paving, parking, walks, curbs and gutters, storm drainage, information systems, landscaping and signage. Work will include installation of a video monitoring, alarm and intercom systems for safety. Air conditioning will be provided by a self contained system. Measures in accordance with the Department of Defense (DoD) minimum antiterrorism for buildings standards as well as access for individuals with disabilities will be provided.

Contract W9128A-12-C-0002 was set aside for small business and utilized the sealed bidding procurement method; 13 bids were received. Performance period for the construction is 630 calendar days.
