The Kawaihae Deep Draft Harbor is located on the northwest coast of the island of Hawaii. It was authorized by the River and Harbor Act of 1950 and the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1965. The project was completed in July 1962 and enlarged in January 1973 at a total cost of $6,298,133 (Federal: $6,236,637; non-Federal: $61,496).
The existing project consists of an entrance channel (3,270 feet long by 40 feet deep); a harbor basin (1,450 feet wide by 35 feet deep); and a rubble-mound breakwater (2,650 feet long). The local sponsor is the State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation.
