Paauau Stream

The Paauau Stream Flood Control project is located in the Pahala District south of Hilo on the island of Hawaii. In response to a request from the Mayor of Hawaii in June 1980, the Honolulu District investigated, justified and constructed the project. It was authorized under Section 205 of the Flood Control Act of 1948. The project was completed in October 1984 at a cost of $1,820,279 (Federal).

It consists of a levee about 260 feet long; five concrete rubble masonry (CRM) walls totaling 1,800 feet in length; 2,700 feet of boulder concrete slope lining; and floodplain easement and management along the left bank. There are approximately 273 homes located within the project area. To date, the project has prevented more than $1.52 million in projected damages, within the project area. The local sponsor is the County of Hawaii, Department of Public Works.
