Wai’anae Small Boat Harbor

Wai’anae Small Boat Harbor is located on the west coast of O’ahu, Hawai’i. The project was authorized by the River and Harbor Act of 1965.The non-Federal sponsor is the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, Department of Land and Natural Resources, State of Hawai’i. The project is in the operations and maintenance phase.

The project was completed in 1979 for a total project cost of $3,845,676 (Federal: $1,943,010; non-Federal: $1,902,666). The general navigation features consist of a main breakwater that is 1,690 feet long; a stub breakwater that is 220 feet long; an entrance channel that is 1,150 feet long, 150 to 180 feet wide, and 15 feet deep; a main access channel that is 400 feet long, 100 feet wide, and 12 feet deep; and a turning basin that is 330 feet long, 200 feet wide, and 12 feet deep. Non-Federal project features include 109 berths and 7 boat ramps.

The waters of the Wai’anae coast are popular with the boating public and the nearby fishing grounds are known for their productivity. Wai’anae Small Boat Harbor is the busiest harbor serving trailer boats within the state, generating more than $2,000,000 annually through commercial diving and fishing, and other tourism activities.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for maintaining the project structures and project depths in the entrance channel and turning basin area.  Maintenance dredging was last completed in 2010.
