Lieutenant Colonel James D. Hoyman is a native of Springfield, Virginia. In 1998, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree and was commissioned into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He also holds Master’s degrees in Engineering Management from Missouri University of Science and Technology and Organizational Psychology from Columbia University.
Lieutenant Colonel Hoyman most recently served as the Professor of Military Science at Wheaton College, Illinois from 2013 to 2016. During this time leading the ROTC detachment at Wheaton, the program commissioned 78 Army officers.
As a lieutenant, he served with the 168th Engineer Battalion at Fort Lewis, Washington and with the 44th Engineer Battalion at Camp Howze, Korea.
Lieutenant Colonel Hoyman’s next operational assignment was with the 130th Engineer Brigade in Germany in 2002. He served as the Logistics Officer (S4) as the brigade deployed to Kuwait and Iraq for the first year of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following the 2003 deployment, he transitioned to the 94th Engineer Battalion where he took command of Alpha Company. He commanded the company through the unit’s one year deployment to Mosul, Iraq in 2005.
He was later assigned back to West Point to serve as a Tactical Officer for Cadet Company H-3. After one year, he exchanged to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs to serve as the Air Officer Commanding of Cadet Squadron 33.
In 2011, he reported to the 326th Engineer Battalion in Fort Campbell, Kentucky as the battalion executive officer and deployed to Operation New Dawn in Iraq. After returning to Fort Campbell, the unit focused on preparing and deploying companies to Afghanistan.
Lieutenant Colonel Hoyman is a graduate of the Engineer Basic and Advanced Courses as well as the Command and General Staff College. He is Air Assault qualified and a Sapper Leader Course graduate. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Colorado.
His military awards include two Bronze Stars and five Meritorious Service Medals. He has also been awarded the Engineer Regiment’s Bronze Order of the de Fleury medal.
Lieutenant Colonel Hoyman is married to Lesley who hails from Pennsylvania. She is a Registered Nurse with medical experience in India, Togo, Russia, and Iraq.
