Photograph of Honolulu Harbor on the island of Oahu. The project is located at the southern edge of the downtown and industrial portion of Honolulu. It is the principal port for the State of Hawaii and an important link in the commerce of the Pacific Basin. The harbor is the largest nonmilitary port on Oahu. Since its initial construction by the Hawaiian monarchy in 1899, the harbor has been expanded and deepened many times. This project represented not only the first federal improvements to the harbor, but also the first Corps civil works project to be undertaken in Hawaii in 1905.
