Volunteer employees proctor, score exams for 2020 Oahu MATHCOUNTS competition
HONOLULU, Hawaii (Feb. 12, 2020) -- A cadre of District employees volunteered Feb. 8 as scorers and proctors for the 47th MATHCOUNTS Oahu competition at Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu. This year 240 students representing 27 Oahu schools participated in the event. Many of the Honolulu District volunteers will return March 14 to provide assistance at the State MATHCOUNTS competition. The MATHCOUNTS Program is sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers to emphasize the importance of mathematical skills in the development of future technology and to encourage students to excel in these areas. MATHCOUNTS builds skills, promotes strategic problem solving and challenges students to sharpen their analytical abilities by bringing together middle school students in a lively exchange of mathematical ideas through competition. Students are coached throughout the year at their respective school to participate as individuals and as teams in a series of written and oral competitions at the chapter, state and national levels. Each February, students are selected to represent their school at a local chapter MATHCOUNTS competition. The winners of this competition progress to the state level competition in March for a chance to represent the State of Hawaii at the national finals May 9-12 in Orlando, FL.
