    April 25 marked the 100th day of Lahaina debris removal for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the wake of the August 2023 wildfires that claimed more than 100 lives, displaced more than 6,000 families and caused around $5.5 billion in property damage on the Hawaiian Island of Maui.

    Battle captains help navigate RFO through disaster recovery operations in Maui

    A Recovery Field Office is a vital element of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ operations during Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster recovery missions. A management function of an RFO consists of a group of active-duty Soldiers, dubbed battle captains. Battle captains are a vital component of USACE’s disaster deployment response. A battle captain's primary tasks are to receive, track and distribute information to the team as well as advise the RFO commander, RFO personnel, and USACE leadership on current mission objectives.

    Veteran emergency manager leads USACE Recovery Field Office on Maui

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has established a Recovery Field Office on Maui in support of the Hawai'i wildfires disaster response, and veteran emergency manager from the USACE Nashville District Jerry Breznican has assumed a key role managing the hub of USACE response activities.
