Núñez, a retired U.S. Army officer and USACE emergency preparedness program manager, it also meant finding ways to stay grounded and connected while supporting recovery efforts in Saipan following Super Typhoons Sinlaku and Bavi.

    FIRST DEPLOYMENT STORIES: A Spirit of Understanding

    Just 23 days into his USACE civilian career, Capt. Nathaniel Hashisaki volunteered to deploy to Saipan following Super Typhoon Sinlaku. As a soldier, he had experience with military operations, but the mission gave him a new perspective on emergency response. During a visit to Rota, he saw firsthand how USACE’s temporary power mission was helping restore critical services and bring communities closer to normalcy.

    The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) was devastated by back-to-back Category 5 storms, Super Typhoons Sinlaku and Bavi, prompting a rapid joint response from FEMA, the Red Cross, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Operating from the Recovery Field Office, USACE volunteer project engineer, Sarah L. Rhoton, managed critical personnel logistics and helped assess damaged power and school infrastructure on Tinian island. Throughout the extensive rebuilding process, the local CNMI residents deeply moved responders with their remarkable positivity, hospitality, and resilience despite enduring severe destruction and power outages.

    USACE Aids Northern Mariana Islands Recovery with Climate-Resilient Classrooms Following Super Typhoons

    In the aftermath of Super Typhoons Sinlaku and Bavi, residents of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are continuing their road to recovery. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has partnered with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the American Red Cross, and other local and federal agencies to restore life-essential functions across the CNMI.

    Amid the storm-ravaged streets of Saipan, where rooftops still bear the scars of Super Typhoon Sinlaku, two women move with purpose and pride. Christina Etzrodt, and her daughter, Clara Baber, aren’t just colleagues - they’re a mother-daughter team from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Omaha District. United by service, they stand side by side to help families rebuild their homes and their lives. For them, this deployment is more than a mission; it’s a shared journey that strengthens both their bond to their family and their commitment to the community.

    USACE Honolulu District Staff Recipients of Numerous Small Business and Excellence in Contracting Awards

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Honolulu District Contracting Office earned multiple honors for excellence in contracting and small business partnerships during the Excellence in Contracting Awards Program (ECAP) ceremony yesterday at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. The ceremony coincided with the Society of American Military Engineers’ annual Small Business Conference.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District received National Recognition in two different categories this year awarded during 2024 USACE National Award Ceremony: USACE Project Delivery Team of the Year – Excellence and USACE Program Manager of the Year.
