The former Pacific Jungle Combat Training Center (CTC) was comprised of several parcels of land totaling approximately 2,545 acres in the adjacent valleys of Punaluu and Kahana, located in the Koolauloa District on the northeast coast of the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
During World War II, these parcels were used as a unit-level jungle combat training center. Munitions known to have been used or recovered at the site include 75mm armor piercing rounds, 2.36-inch rockets, MKII hand grenades, rifle grenades, 105mm high explosive rounds, 81mm high explosive and practice mortar rounds, and small arms..
A Remedial Investigation (RI) and Feasibility Study (FS) has been conducted at Pacific Jungle CTC to determine what types of cleanup actions are needed to reduce risks from any munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) that may remain on the property as a result of past training activities.
Field work for the Remedial Investigation started in October 2013 and is now finished. A Remedial Investigation (RI) Report was prepared detailing the nature and extent of munitions contamination. The RI Report also assesses hazards to human health from explosives and risks to humans and ecological receptors from chemical munitions constituents. A Feasibility Study was also prepared to develop and analyze remedial alternatives (clean up options) to address explosive hazards identified during the Remedial Investigation.
In addition, the Corps rolled out a Proposed Plan at a Public Meeting on Jan. 11, 2016 to allow the public to review and comment on the preferred remedial alternative to address the potential remaining munitions and explosives of concern (MEC). The proposed plan can be viewed at this link: http://www.poh.usace.army.mil/Portals/10/docs/fuds/Pacific%20Jungle%20FUDS%20Draft-Final%20Proposed%20Plan.pdf
