FORT SHAFTER, HI -- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Honolulu District and Honolulu-based contractor Sumo-Nan, LLC officials broke ground June 14 on a new unaccompanied enlisted personnel housing facility (barracks) for 140 personnel at Helemano Military Reservation.
Kahu Sherman Thompson led the site blessing and groundbreaking ceremonies that were attended by U.S. Army Garrison- Hawaii Executive Officer Col. Jay Hammer, USAG-HI Directorate of Public Works Project Manager Svetlana O’Malley, Stan Sagum, project engineer, SUMO-NAN JV and Honolulu District’s Chief, Construction Branch, Louis Muzzarini.
“Honolulu District is committed to building and managing the construction of high quality projects that improve the quality of life for service members and their families and that provide jobs and money which stimulate the local economy,” said Honolulu District’s Chief, Construction Branch, Louis Muzzarini. “While this is the first barracks to be constructed by SUMO-NAN, LLC, NAN has successfully completed several barracks for the Army, most recently having built the New Barracks on Fort Shafter.”
The new facility will have 70 units in a one-plus-one configuration consisting of two bedrooms with walk-in closets, a shared bath, a kitchenette and dining area, with fire alarm/sprinkler protection, air conditioning and mass notification systems. The barracks includes laundry facilities on each floor, boot wash stations at each ground floor entry, a full basketball court, barbeque area, plus motorcycle and bicycle shelters. The contractor’s design team will be required to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification or better for the design and construction of the facility.
Upon completion the barracks is scheduled to be occupied by the Soldiers of the 307th Integrated Theater Signal Battalion.
The project was awarded as a $28,024,553 firm-fixed-price contract on Sept. 1, 2011 after being solicited as a small business set-aside and having eight proposals received. The project completion date is Oct. 2013.
