New recommended system for Ala Wai project evaluated in technical report

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Honolulu District completed an Engineering Documentation Report Aug. 6 that provides the new recommended plan for the Ala Wai Flood Control Project. The new plan incorporates significantly less impacts on the natural streams and residential properties within the watershed, and focuses on evacuating the water without detaining it in the upper reaches of the watershed valleys. Using this report as the foundation, the project team will now begin the evaluation of costs, economic benefits, and environmental impacts through a supplemental National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Hawaii Environmental Policy Act process (HEPA) process. The study was conducted at the request of the American Samoa Department of Public Works with the intent to help the American Samoa Government identify what transportation assets are most vulnerable to climate changes, and to begin planning for adaptation of these assets by relocation, elevation or protection. Other Pacific Island countries could benefit from a similar assessment that would begin to identify their assets and site-specific vulnerabilities to climate change. USACE team meets with American Samoa Congreswoman Amua Amata

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (Feb. 27, 2020) -- In late February Honolulu District's Regulatory and Civil and Public Works employees met with Department of Public Works, Federal Highway Administration, Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources, and Department of Port Authority in American Samoa. The District team made an office call to meet with American Samoa Congresswoman Aumua Amata to discuss the Tafuna Flood Risk Management Study, the Pacific Territories Post Disaster Watershed Assessment, and port projects. The regulatory team also conducted several compliance inspections during the island visit. DA interns showcase District projects, STEM Careers for 2020 Engineers Week

KANEOHE, Hawaii (Feb. 17, 2020) -- Honolulu District’s Department of the Army engineer interns chatted with dozens of people while manning the District’s 2020 Engineers Week display Feb. 17 at the Windward Mall center court on Oahu. This year’s Engineers Week theme is “Pioneers of Progress.” Curious and interested Oahu residents were able to learn about District projects, programs, STEM job opportunities, as well as STEM careers. The interns created several storyboards for the display that showcases our civil works, IIS, and construction projects across the Pacific region.

USACE, USAG-Kwajalein break ground for $139M Kwajalein runway repair project

KWAJALEIN ATOLL, Republic of the Marshall Islands (Jan. 10, 2020) -- Senior engineer representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Honolulu District and the U.S. Army Garrison Kwajalein broke ground Jan. 10 for the $139 million Bucholz Army Airfield runway repair project. Anthony Funkhouser visited the Schofield Barracks Behavioral Health/Dental project site Dec. 5 where he listened to Project Engineer Dustin Timm give an overview of the two-phase project. and later walked the project site with Timm, District Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Joshua Sturgill, Schofield Barracks Deputy Area Engineer Capt. Katay Phommathep, Project Engineer 1st Lt. Mariah Caid-Loos, Schofield Barracks Area Engineer Jean McAninch, Schofield Barracks Resident Engineer Kimberly Jyo, Construction Representative Kailani Vazquez, and contractor team leadership.

CSM Houston discusses USACE initiatives

During a mini-town hall Dec. 2, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Command Sgt. Maj. Bradley Houston discussed forthcoming Revolutionize USACE initiatives with District personnel and later visited District MILCON project sites at Fort Shafter and Schofield Barracks. During the townhall Houston awarded his signature USACE CSM coin to seven District employees for their excellence in delivering the District mission.

Kathryn Sanborn, Deputy District Engineer for Programs and Project Management Steve Cayetano (first row right), Florence Ching, chief, Military Programs Branch, and Gary Shirakata, Kwajalein Program Manager, met with employees of Honolulu District's Kwajalein Resident Office. Their three-day trip to the Republic of Marshall Islands included meeting new leadership, engaging partners and personnel, as well as project site visits to Echo Pier, the Ronald Reagan Test Site (RTS), and several Army family housing units.
