District Showcases Capabilities for 2013 Engineers Week Activities

More than 300 engineers and friends of the 17 organizations within the Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies, plus invited local VIPs and dignitaries and engineers from Honolulu District, are expected to gather at the Hale Koa's Banyan Tree Showroom Feb. 19 for a luncheon to kick off Engineers Week 2013, which runs Feb. 17 to 23.

Honolulu District Welcomes 565th Engineer Detachment Home from Afghanistan

The Honolulu District welcomed home the District-based 565th Engineer Detachment, Forward Engineer Support Team-Advance (FEST-A) with a Redeployment Ceremony Jan. 24 at District Headquarters to mark the official end of their successful deployment to support Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

US to improve electric grid in Kandahar province

KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — Electricity is a scare resource in Kandahar City but should become less so for Kandahar government district centers and businesses when four separate projects designed to improve electricity distribution in key areas of the city are completed by winter 2013. Regional Command-South is overseeing these projects currently in the planning phase. Each required comprehensive coordination among RC-South, USAID, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, the Afghan electric utility company.

Army Engineers fought and lived through the attack on Pearl Harbor

Seven December 1941 was the opening scene of World War II, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was there. At 7:55 a.m., two waves of Japanese warplanes from a naval task force about 250 miles north of Hawaii appeared over Oahu. Some headed for American warships at Pearl Harbor and the planes on the ground at nearby Hickam Field; others hit Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Field, and Bellows Field.

Paving the road to stable economic growth at Shur Andam Industrial Park

The entrepreneurs at the Shur Andam Industrial Park in Kandahar need a paved road, so civil engineers from the 565th Engineer Detachment Forward Engineer Support Team - Advance conducted a road survey Nov. 7, 2012, to develop designs and specifications, a statement of work and cost estimate to facilitate future construction of a road at Shur Andam.

Corps, Garrison Participate in Hawaiian Site Blessing for First Phase of new CAB Complex

U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii, Army Corps of Engineers and contractor David Boland LLC personnel participated in a Hawaiian site blessing Nov. 28, 2012 on the south side of the Wheeler airstrip, officially starting the construction for the first phase of the new 25th Infantry Division (25th ID) Combat Aviation Brigade Complex (CAB). Hawaiian cultural practitioner Keone Nunes led the Hawaiian blessing of more than 60 phase one workers and staff and the work site itself.
