Hilo Harbor

Hilo Harbor is located on the northeastern side of the island of Hawai’i. Hilo Harbor was authorized under the River and Harbor Act of 1907. Subsequent work was authorized under the River and Harbor Act of 1912 and 1925. The local sponsor is the State of Hawai’i Department of Transportation Harbors Division.

Hilo Harbor was completed in 1930 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Federal project consists of a 10,080-foot-long breakwater protecting a 35-foot-deep harbor basin.

Hilo Harbor is one of the two main commercial ports for the island of Hawai’i and is more than 70 miles from Kawaihae Harbor that serves the west side of the island.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for operations and maintenance of general navigation features including the breakwater and basin, and DOT is responsible to maintain depths in berthing and mooring areas. Maintenance dredging was conducted in 2016.
