Lepua Area

The Lepua Village Shoreline Protection Project is located on the north coast of Pago Pago Harbor on Tutuila Island, American Samoa. The project was authorized by Section 103 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1962. The American Samoa Government is the local sponsor and owner, responsible to operate and maintain the project. The project is in the operations and maintenance phase.

The Lepua Village Shoreline Protection Project was completed in 1991 at a cost of $1,712,000 (Federal: $1,312,000; non-Federal: $400,000). The project consists of a 3,100-foot revetment. The Lepua project was constructed jointly with the Masefau Shore Protection Project in September 1991. In 2017, the local sponsor’s request was granted to repair and tie into the west end of the existing project with a new revetment installation as part of the Federal Highways Administration’s project titled, “Route 001 Atuu to Laulii (Leloaloa Village) Roadway Embankment and Shoreline (FHWA No.: ERAQ-ER0-1 (019))” under Section 14 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899, 33 U.S. Code 408 (Section 408).  Repairing the displaced stones and breaches within the revetment were completed by the American Samoa Government in 2018.

Annual inspections are conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with the American Samoa Government to ensure the project is performing as intended.
