Afono Area

The Afono Shore Protection Project is located on the northeast coast of the island of Tutuila, American Samoa. It was authorized in July 1975 under Section 103a of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1962, as amended. The American Samoa Government is the local sponsor and owner, responsible to operate and maintain the project. The project is in the operations and maintenance phase.

The project was completed in October 1977 at a cost of $166,746 (Federal: $83,373; non-Federal: $83,373). The project consists of a 340-foot-long rock revetment with a crest elevation of 13.5 feet Mean Low Water and a side slope of 1 vertical to 2 horizontal.  The purpose of the project is to reduce the impact of erosion and other coastal hazards on the nearby school. Afono is one of the more populous villages on the island of Tutuila.

Annual inspections are conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with the American Samoa Government to ensure the project is performing as intended.
