Kahoma Stream Flood Control Project

The Kahoma Stream Flood Control Project (FCP) is located in Lahaina on the west coast on the island of Maui. The project was authorized under Section 201 of the Flood Control Act of 1965. The local sponsor is the County of Maui, Department of Public Works.

The project was cost shared with the local sponsor and completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) in September 1990 and modified in October 1996.  The drainage basin is 5.4 square miles, and the project consists of a 5,415-foot concrete channel, a debris basin (54,000 cubic yards design volume), an offshore rubble apron, three pre-stressed concrete bridges, and related utility relocations.  The project is designed for standard project flood level protection with a discharge of 15,200 cubic feet per second.

The project was turned over to the local sponsor upon construction completion to operate and maintain.  The Corps conducts annual inspections with the local sponsor to ensure the project is performing as intended.
