Merizo Flood Risk Management

The Merizo Flood Risk Management Project is currently in the feasibility study phase. The study area is located on the southern coast of Guam in the village of Merizo and is authorized by Section 205 of the Flood Control Act of 1948, as amended. This authority allows for study, design, and construction of small flood risk management projects in partnership with non-federal government agencies. The Non-Federal Sponsor is the Government of Guam.

The Corps is investigating alternatives to reduce flood risk in the area caused by the Nelansa River, also known as the Manell River. Previous man-made alterations to Manell River cause it to surge as it approaches Manell Channel which has resulted in increased flooding of Route 4 and numerous private residences. A Feasibility Cost Share Agreement (FCSA) is expected to be executed in May 2023.
