Kekaha Beach

Kekaha Beach is located on the southwest coast of the island of Kaua’i near the town of Kekaha. The project was authorized for construction in July 1978 under Section 103 of the River and Harbor Act of 1962, as amended.  The local sponsor is the State of Hawai’i, Department of Transportation, Highways Division. The project is in the operations and maintenance phase.

The project was completed in May 1980 at a cost of $3,047,520 (Federal $1,374,996; non-Federal $1,672,524). It consists of a 6,250-foot-long rubble mound revetment with a crest elevation of 12 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW).

Repair of Hurricane Iwa damages to the revetment in November 1982 were completed in October 1983 under the authority of Public Law 84-99.

The State owns the project, which was turned over upon construction completion to operate and maintain.  Annual inspections are conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with the State to ensure the project is performing as intended.

Kekeha Beach Park offers recreational activities including surfing and fishing. The islands of Ni’ihau and Lehua rock are also visible from this area.
